Labor Day is here, and it is time for Mom and Dad to do some grilling and enjoy family time along with a cocktail or maybe 2. 😊 If you are trying to stay healthy this holiday weekend, you can still enjoy some yummy adult beverages with your lean chicken, meats, veggie burgers and fish.

These cocktails are also incredibly simple to make. Our favorite cocktail going into the Labor Day weekend is the “SUAREZ” Margarita.  This margarita has only 3 ingredients, clear blue agave tequila, freshly squeezed lime juice and agave syrup.  This is such a refreshing summer drink that will not be too unfavorable to the waistline.  We first tried this delicious drink with bottled lime juice, and it was amazing.  However, we ran out and had no choice but to squeeze some limes on our next round, and WOW, the drink was even better and more refreshing with the real freshly squeezed limes. 

You can always stick to the traditional light beers for your barbecues. The light beers hover around 70-100 calories. Just try to stay away from the extra stout brews, which can pack around 150-200 calories.  Another popular drink is wine.  Five (5) ounces of wine has around 125 calories.  Be sure to stay away from sangria, which might contain fruit juices and other alcohols which add tons of calories.

TEQUILA

Good choice:  Suarez Margarita (142 calories)

  • 1.5 ounces of pure agave Tequila (97 Calories)
  • 1 ounce of freshly squeezed Lime Juice. (You can substitute bottled lime juice, but you will be sacrificing some of the delicious natural flavor that the freshly squeezed lime gives you.)
  • ½ ounce Agave Syrup (45 calories)

Not so good choice:

  • Frozen Margarita – can range from 300 to 800 calories

VODKA

Good choice:  Vodka with Seltzer (100 calories)

  • 1.5 ounces of Vodka
  • Seltzer Water (Soda water)
  • 1 ounce of freshly squeezed Lime Juice

Not so good choice:

  • Sex on the Beach – can range around 350 calories with 32 grams of carbs and sugar

RUM

Good choice:  Rum with Diet Coke (100 calories)

  • 1.5 ounces of Rum
  • Diet Coke

Not so good choice:

  • Piña Colada – can range around 250 calories with 32 grams of carbs and 31 grams of sugar

CHAMPAGNE

Good choice:  Champagne with Seltzer (90 calories)

  • 4 ounces of Champagne
  • Seltzer Water

Not so good choice:

  • Mimosa’s – jumps calories up to around 150 calories for a small portion
